PORTLAND (WGME) -- A mounting capacity crisis for biosolids could soon cripple the state's wastewater treatment facilities if action isn't taken, a new report warns.

The study, commissioned by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, evaluated biosolid management in Maine and made recommendations for how best to handle the waste in the future.

"The report identified that we're in need of capacity and capacity is a concern," Portland Water District Director of Wastewater Services Scott Firmin said. "For every pound of pollution that comes into this plant, we generate a pound of biosolids."
