The COVID-19 virus pandemic has aggravated a longstanding headache for sewer plant operators locally and nationwide, even worldwide.

“Flushable” wipes, along with Clorox and other disinfectant wipes, are clogging pipes and sewer lines, and especially pumps at sewer treatment facilities.

Doug Vitovich, facilities manager for Chestnut Ridge Municipal Authority, issued a plea on Tuesday for people to stop putting the disposable wipes into the system.

People need to realize the damage it can do to any wastewater treatment facility,” he said.

Vitovich said the problem with the “flushable” wipes is not a new one.
