AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) -- An emergency pieces of legislation aimed at curbing Maine's wastewater sludge crisis is expected to be signed into law by Governor Janet Mills this week.

The bill, LD 718, will allow the operator of the state's landfill in Old Town to begin importing more bulky waste and construction materials to mix in with the sludge and help make the landfill more stable.

"We’re pleased that LD 718 was so strongly supported by the Maine State Legislature and that all parties have successfully collaborated on a solution to the issues we faced earlier this year," Casella Waste Systems, which operates the landfill, wrote in a statement. "The immediate passage and implementation of LD 718 will give us and others the necessary time to continue to consider all options in developing an economically and environmentally sustainable solution to managing Maine’s municipal biosolids."
