he City of Elyria and the Environmental Protection Agency has entered into an agreement that will set the stage for the investment of $200 million to complete improvements to the city’s sewer system and pollution control plant.

The two entities formalized the agreement in a consent decree, according to a news release issued last week by Elyria Public Information Officer Kevin Cloud.

Negotiations to reach the agreement have been ongoing for the past several years while the city simultaneously has been investing in its water and sewer infrastructure, the release stated.

“This new decree solidifies our plan for further improvement and will continue addressing a century-old sewer system,” Cloud said. “We appreciate the flexibility built into the consent decree as it allows the city an extended period of time to continue the improvements already planned.
