EPA Grants NACWA Request, Extends Comment Period on Draft Recommended Aquatic Life Criteria for PFOA/PFOS to July 2

May 26, 2022

NACWA is pleased to announce that EPA has published a pre-publication notice on its website granting an additional 30-days for public comment on its recently proposed draft recommended aquatic life criteria for PFOA and PFOS. The deadline for comment is now July 2, 2022.

This extension comes after NACWA and several other stakeholders asked for more time given the novelty of the issue and the fact this is the first attempt at establishing ambient water quality criteria for PFOA and PFOS. The synthetic suite of PFAS chemicals are inherently scientifically complex and additional time is warranted to consider the data EPA relied upon to derive the criterion.

NACWA is in the process of developing comments for these recommended criteria and would like to hear from members on how these criteria, if adopted as is by states as water quality standards, would impact your utility.

Members with input and questions are asked to please contact Emily Remmel, NACWA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs.
