What We Offer

Inland Empire Utilities Agency Encourages Community to ‘Be Sewer Smart’

Dec 5, 2024

Be_Sewer_Smart_AdDuring the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA/Agency) developed their ongoing Be Sewer Smart Campaign, which addresses the growing issue of the improper disposal of fats, oils, and greases (FOG), wipes and other hygiene products marketed as ‘flushable’. Through short videos, photos and animated graphics, the campaign gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at the hard work involved in clearing sewer drains, the surprising items found, and the problems caused by improper disposal. Each piece of campaign collateral was creatively crafted to keep viewers engaged and informed on how to make a difference within their homes and communities as it relates to FOG and wipes disposal.

Through this campaign, IEUA uses various outlets to reach its 935,000 residents and beyond, including the Agency’s website, social media, blogs, targeted email blasts, digital banners, and newspaper ads. All campaign materials were created in-house, allowing staff to develop new communication skills without adding costs or needing extra training. By working closely with local customer agencies, IEUA ensures the message spreads organically across multiple platforms while maintaining a consistent tone and branding.

The most valuable part of this campaign? The materials can be refreshed and reused whenever needed, helping IEUA and its partners address pollution spikes caused by wipes and FOG. The timelessness of the message and visuals makes this campaign a marketer’s dream!

You can see the campaign in action on IEUA’s social media channels (@IEUAwater) or by visiting ieua.org. The message is simple yet powerful: “Whether it’s FOG or wipes, our actions affect the flow of water. Let’s all #BeSewerSmart!”

In recognition of the campaign’s impact, NACWA awarded the Inland Empire Utilities Agency a 2024 National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information & Education: E-Media category. Congratulations to everyone involved!
