NACWA Takes PFAS and Pretreatment Message on the Road

Nov 2, 2023

NACWA traveled to Nashua, NH, last week to provide an update of NACWA’s advocacy on PFAS at the New England Pretreatment Coordinators Workshop.  The annual two-day workshop, plus optional day of training, brings together utility and state pretreatment coordinators from New England and other states throughout the country.

NACWA’s presentation focused on the federal actions related to PFAS that will affect utilities, particularly the EPA proposal to designate PFAS compounds as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and EPA’s planned POTW Influent Study

NACWA also spoke at the National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF) Washington Forum on October 31, providing the clean water utility perspective on PFAS source control.  The presentation highlighted the successful collaboration between utility pretreatment programs and metal finishers to reduce the amount of pollutants discharged to the sewer systems, and emphasized the pressures that POTWs are under related to PFAS, particularly related to biosolids and the potential inclusion of PFAS in CERCLA.
