NACWA Urges Continuation of Denver Lead Reduction Program

Jun 23, 2022

NACWA submitted a letter June 16 asking EPA Region 8 to extend Denver Water’s Lead Reduction Program for its full 15-year term.

Denver’s Lead Reduction Program employs a suite of strategies to reduce levels of lead in drinking water such as adjusting pH/alkalinity, replacing customer-owned lead service lines, and providing customers with filters until their service lines are replaced.

Critically, however, the program also protects water quality and avoids potentially dangerous algal blooms by avoiding the addition of harmful chemicals that would negatively impact downstream publicly owned treatment works and their provision of affordable clean water services.

NACWA is therefore encouraging EPA to continue Denver’s program, and to support other lead service line reduction efforts throughout the country that are protective of both human health and downstream water quality.
