Clean Water Current

The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works held a hearing this morning, PFAS: the View from Affected Citizens and States, which included testimony from state officials from New Mexico and West Virginia, a citizen advocacy group, and the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

The testimony focused largely on the experiences of states in addressing Department of Defense related PFAS contamination of groundwater and drinking water. AWWA’s testimony, while focused on drinking water issues, also highlighted its shared concerns with the clean water sector over ensuring that polluters, not passive receivers of PFAS like water and wastewater utilities, pay for needed controls and cleanup.

PFAS have become a major concern across the country, with many states implementing measures to regulate this vast class of substances given concerns over harm to public health and the environment. NACWA remains closely engaged both with Congress and U.S. EPA on efforts to regulate PFAS at the federal level.
