EPA Publishes Recommendations for Restoring Water Quality in Unused Buildings

(May 13, 2020) – With the coronavirus pandemic causing many businesses and buildings to be closed for long periods of time, the stagnated water in pipes can become unsafe for drinking and other uses. EPA has published recommendations for minimizing water stagnation and steps to take before a building is re-opened. Since the public may not be aware of the potential health hazards of stagnated water, including Legionnaire’s disease, the growth of other pathogens, and corrosion issues. Utilities may need to consider working with the businesses, schools and other entities in their service areas to provide education and recommendations for flushing water systems as their areas re-open.
