Collaboration Spearheaded by Western Monmouth Utilities Authority Seeks to Inspire Passion in Future Leaders

Jul 11, 2024

stem_camp_1In the summer of 2023, the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (WMUA) embarked on an inspiring journey that not only enriched young minds but also illuminated a path to a brighter, more environmentally conscious future. This remarkable story revolves around a unique partnership with the Monmouth Council Boy Scouts of America (MCBSA) and Teamsters Local 701, which transformed the lives of over 20 Scouts and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those involved.

At the center of this transformative partnership was the Environmental Stem Careers Merit Badge Summer Camp, hosted at WMUA's Pine Brook Wastewater Treatment Plant. This initiative wasn't just about badges though, it was about opening doors to a world of possibilities in environmental careers.

Brian J. Valentino, WMUA's CEO, expressed the profound impact of this program saying, "Our goal was to spark curiosity, inspire passion, and show these young Scouts that the path to a meaningful career can be found in protecting our environment."

The camp brought together both management and labor employees from WMUA, volunteer and career Scout leaders, and representatives from Teamsters Local 701, who collectively served as mentors, guiding Scouts through a journey of learning and self-discovery. In doing so, they uncovered talents, honed skills, and ignited the flame of curiosity about the world of environmental science and conservation.

One Scout, Joseph, shared his experience stating, "This wasn't just a camp; it was a life-changing experience. I've learned that protecting the environment isn't just about clean water--it's about securing a better future for all of us."

stem_camp_2“We are so happy to be included in this important project,” explained WMUA’s labor partner Teamsters Local 701 Secretary/Treasurer Greg Riggleman who was the instructor for American Labor Merit Badge.  “The future workforce of America requires young people like these knowing more about the role each part of the economy plays in every sector of our lives.”

The impact of this program extends beyond the Scout participants, reaching the very heart of WMUA's mission and vision. By nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards, WMUA is planting seeds of change that will flourish into a greener, more sustainable future.

This initiative embodies WMUA's commitment to community leadership and environmental excellence. As WMUA CEO Valentino proudly states, "Our commitment doesn't stop at wastewater treatment; it extends to inspiring the next generation to safeguard our environment."

NACWA awarded Western Monmouth Utilities Authority a 2024 National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information & Education: Education Program category for its transformative program. Congratulations to everyone involved!
