Senate Looks to Advance Appropriations Package with Key Clean Water Priorities

Oct 30, 2019

(October 30, 2019) – The US Senate this week is debating a multi-bill Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) appropriations package which includes the Interior & Environment Appropriations measure to fund the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and key clean water programs.  This funding bill includes several key NACWA and public clean water sector priorities.

The agreement by Senate appropriators and leadership to move forward on the package this week is a positive step as the process had been stalled in recent weeks due to potentially contentious policy riders.

The House passed its version of the FY20 Interior & Environment Appropriations bill this summer, which also included several key NACWA priorities and wins.

With the federal government currently operating under a short-term continuing resolution (CR) passed by Congress earlier this fall that funds the government at current levels until November 21, House and Senate negotiators will have to work fast to conference the package for a final vote in both chambers

NACWA will continue working with both the House and Senate to ensure the Association’s funding priorities are included in any final bill and urges all NACWA members to continue advocating with their respective Representatives and Senators on the importance of funding for clean water programs.  Please contact Jason Isakovic or Kristina Surfus, NACWA’s Legislative Directors, with any questions.
