Continued NACWA Member Outreach on PFAS Critical

Oct 23, 2019

(October 23, 2019) – Over the past several months, the strong advocacy efforts by countless NACWA members have played a pivotal role in educating Members of Congress and their staffs about the problematic PFAS provisions included in the House passed National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) (H.R. 2500).

Given the contentious nature that the PFAS issue has become in DC and nationwide, which in many cases has generated misinformation, this education by the clean water sector has been crucial in providing sound information, practical potential implications, and demonstrating the need for a proper scientific and regulatory process.

However, with Congressional leadership working to finalize NDAA negotiations as soon as possible and continued pressure to include ill-crafted PFAS requirements, now is the time to double down on these efforts and ensure Members of Congress understand the potential unintended consequences the House provisions will have on local public clean water utilities and their local communities.

NACWA encourages all its members to reach out to their respective Representatives and Senators and advocate that any final legislative package does not circumvent the ongoing scientific and regulatory process and include costly or unworkable provisions for public wastewater utilities.

NACWA’s PFAS advocacy page provides further background and resources, including a template letter, for Association members to utilize as they see fit in their targeted outreach.  Please contact Jason Isakovic or Kristina Surfus, NACWA’s Legislative Directors, with any questions or for assistance.
